Starting out, Barnes spent most of his early career in the theatre performing musicals. He was part of the prestigious National Youth Music Theatre where he developed his skills and overall stage presence. Before he fully committed to acting, he was previously a singer for the band Hyrise.
In 2006, he began working in television, playing small roles in various TV shows such as Doctor. After appearing in various plays, he made his first appearance on the silver screen in the 2007 film Stardust. Following the success of that film, he also had a part in Bigga than Ben, a UK comedy film.
Barnes is mostly known for his work in the film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian where he assumed the role of Caspian. Most fans of the film loved his performance and boyish good looks which greatly helped his career. Preparing for the film, Barnes spent a lot of time in New Zealand where he learned horseback riding as well as minor stunts for the film.
Following the positive response of the film, he then went on to co-star with Jessica Biel in the romantic comedy East Virtue in 2008 which premiered in the Toronto International Film Festival. He was also cast for the lead role in Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray in 2009. In the same year, Barnes was nominated for his performance as Prince Caspian for MTV’s Movie Breakthrough Male Award.
He went on to reprise the role of Prince Caspian in 2010 for the third part of the series The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The film received positive reviews and ranked 12th highest grossing film in the year 2010.
He co-starred in the TV drama By the Gun alongside Leighton Meester and Harvey Keitel which premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in 2014. In the following year, he also portrayed Sam Adams in the mini-series Sons of Liberty. Later in 2018, he was signed to play Billy Russo in Netflix’s The Punisher which will premiere late 2018.
