Cambridge Analytica was founded in 2013, after the company was split from its parent company, SCL group. The people who were involved in building the company included Alexander Nix, as well as Robert Mercer and Steve Bannon. Steve Bannon was the head of Breitbart, and Robert Mercer is an eccentric billionaire who funded Donald Trump’s campaign, as well as Breitbart and many right-wing causes.
SCL group, it’s parent, was involved in worldwide elections, but Cambridge Analytica was supposed to target the USA. Some have suggested that SCL is involved in propaganda, and may even have been involved in coups in third world countries.
Alexander Nix started out as a financial analyst before working with SCL Group.

Alexander Nix and his company were involved in the 2014 elections, where it earned a few hundred thousand dollars for work on different campaigns. It made significantly more money in 2016, when it received around $6 million from Ted Cruz, several hundred thousand dollars from Ben Carson, and $1 million or more from Trump.
Much of the money spent on CA was given to the candidates by Mercer, so it appears that he was essentially paying himself.
Cambridge Analytica received $15 million from Robert Mercer, according to Cruchbase. It claims that the company has over 100 employees, although that seems a bit suspect, considering its funding. It’s more likely that SCL Group has that many employees.
