Amy was born in Plymouth, Minnesota. She is the daughter of Jim Klobuchar, who was an American journalist, author, and columnist. Her father is of Slovene descent. Her maternal grandparents emigrated from Switzerland to America. Amy’s parents divorced when she was 15 years old. According to sources, she wasn’t on good terms with her father until he left drinking in the 1990s. She studied Bachelor of Art from the University of Yale.
Amy is married to John Bessler, a professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law.
