Barbara Bush was more than just the wife of George H. W. Bush because she used her position to help out in areas that she feels needed improving. Before her husband got elected as President of the United States, she engaged herself in Republican women’s groups as well as invested time helping out in various other charities over her life. She even went against normal Republican values because she was “pro-choice”. She said that homosexuality and abortion is a personal choice and people should not be forced what to do with their lives.
It wasn’t until she officially became the First Lady in 1989 did she used her power again to help out the United States. Due to son Neil suffering from dyslexia, she spent a lot of time taking an interest in literacy issues. She said that homelessness is one effect from illteracy so she traveled both the country and around the world to help kids read as much as they can. She founded the ‘Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy’ in order to increase literacy rates all across the United States. Many people were coming from other countries and did not know how to read, write or speak English so it was her goal in order to get people educated as much as she could. She was quite popular as her time as the First Lady even though her husband was in office for only one term at four years.
In more later years, she has been vocal for her support for the next Presidents. At first she did not endorse her own son Jeb Bush for the role as she felt there had been enough Bushes in the Oval Office already. She eventually changed her stance, although Jeb Bush never got the job. Despite being a Republican, it sounds like she did not vote for Donald Trump due to his sexist remarks against women in his campaign back in 2016.
Her final years she battled lots of illnesses and she received no more medical treatment two days prior to her death. Despite not being a fan of Trump, Trump did send his condolences to the former First Lady.
