Career and Earnings
Bob Charles worked as a bank teller in the town of Masterton, New Zealand where he was living. After winning the New Zealand Open (an annual premier men’s golf tournament in New Zealand), Charles decided to hone his golf skills as an amateur and continued to work with the bank for another 6 years.
Charles turned pro in 1960 and in 1961 he won the New Zealand PGA Championship. After this win, Charles decided to venture overseas and play in the more competitive and lucrative North America and European circuit.
Bob has won about 80 golf tournaments around the globe. His win in the 1969 World Marchplay Championship is considered to be his best win of the PGA circuit. After winning the British Open Championship, he returned after 30 years to win the Senior British Open. Bob Charles is one of the two New Zealand golfers to win a men’s major golf championship.
In 2007, Bob Charles became the oldest golfer to take a shot at the European Tour, which he did not win. Charles had a successful run on the Senior PGA tour. He won 23 titles in 3 years. At the age of 71 in 2007, Charles finished second on the European’s Senior Tour’s.
