Cassadee Pope was born on August 28th, 1989 in West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S. Before becoming a famous name in the country music scene, she started forming a band in high school named Blake with her good friend Mike Gentile. Both of them attended Wellington High School in Florida, although the band Blake never got a record deal and the band disbanded in 2008. Mike Gentile and Cassadee Pope then met with Alex Lipshaw, Michael “Jersey” Moriarty, and Elliot James to form the band called Hey Monday.
Hey Monday arguably became Cassadee Pope’s most famous endeavor as it was the band that broke her into the music industry and allowed her to meet with many other musicians. Hey Monday was first found out by Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz and he signed them do his own record label called Decaydance. Columbia Records was also interested in signing the band so both labels helped Pope and Hey Monday record “Hold On Tight” which was the band’s only full released album. Pope co-wrote on all of the songs on the album and they released two singles called “Homecoming” and “How You Love Me Now”. Pope also got guest spots in singing with other rock bands such as All Time Low, Yellowcard and more.
Sadly, Hey Monday’s first album did not make a huge buzz in the music industry because they were unfairly compared to Paramore and other punk rock bands with female singers in them. Due to this, the band never released a second full length album although they did manage to release several EPs after that. One of the songs “Candles” was even popular enough to be covered by the TV show Glee which helped the band get more mainstream exposure.
Despite the increased exposure, Hey Monday just released more small EPs and then decided to go on an indefinite hiatus at the end of 2011. The band “broke up” on good terms, although six years later we have yet to see them get back together. The other band members decided to make new bands while Cassadee Pope herself concentrated in her solo career which blossomed in 2012.
Cassadee Pope did not become a nationwide star until she auditioned in Season 3 of The Voice. Due to her experience working in Hey Monday, Pope already had the skills to sing in front of a huge live audience week in and week out. Since her mentor was Blake Shelton, Pope made more country music since 2012 and has kept to this genre ever since. That said, she sang her old school Hey Monday songs recently during the last ever Warped Tour in 2018.
