    Charles Leigh’s professional career started when Pittsburgh Steelers signed him as a free agent in 1965. The commissioner of NFL at that time was Pete Rozelle who allowed Leigh to be the first and the last player to be signed straight from the high school. Apart from NFL, Leigh also played in Continental Football League and Canadian Football League.

    In Continental Football League, Charles Leigh played three years from Orlando Panthers. Alongside playing for Panthers, Leigh became the part of Cleveland Browns’ taxi squad between 1996 and 1997. In 1998, Charles became the part of the original team of Browns and made his NFL debut. In 1969, Cleveland Browns released him. For this team, Leigh had 5.4-yard per return average as he returned 14 punts for 76 yards. His stats for Browns also include 23 yards per return average as he returned 14 kickoffs for 322 yards.

    In the Canadian Football League, Leigh was signed by Ottawa Rough Riders in 1970. However, Charles played only eight games for this team before getting released. Miami Dolphins signed Charles for the next season, and he appeared in all 14 games but failed to give outstanding performance. He was unable to represent Dolphins in Super Bowl VI due to his separated right shoulder.

    In the next season, Leigh played as a punt returner for Miami Dolphins and helped them to win the Super Bowl VII against Washington Redskins. Charles returned 22 punts which were ranked at 5th overall in that NFL season. Leigh continued his promising performance for the next season as well for the Dolphins. The Dolphins won Super Bowl championship for the second time, and Leigh had a prominent role in it. Leigh had an average of 27.9 after returning nine kickoffs for 251 yards.

    Leigh played only one game for Miami Dolphins before being waived in 1974. His next and the last team in his career was Green Bay Packers. It was his final season in NFL as he played only 10 games for Packers and returned 9 kickoffs for 201 yards.
