Serafini bats Switch and throw Left. Although Serafini was drafted in 1992, he debuted in the MLB on June 25, 1996, for the Minnesota Twins. Before this, he played for the rookie league team, Single-A team, and High-A team of Twins. His records in the minor leagues earned him 76th-rank from Baseball America.
After playing a few games, his contract was purchased by Chicago Cubs from Twins in 1999. Serafini played 42 games for Cubs in which he recorded a 6.93 ERA. Towards the end of 1999, Dan was traded for Brandon Pernell with San Diego Padres. He averaged 18.00 ERA in the three games he played for Padres. Padres traded Dan to Pittsburgh Pirates, and his ERA was 4.91 in the 11 starts he made.
