Forbes has compiled a list of the most expensive movies ever made– and it probably won’t surprise you that many of the movies involve superheroes, endearing pirates or a certain sorcerer.
Forbes’ list indicates that Disney has no problem shelling out hundreds of millions of dollars to make a film- as it did in 2007 with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
While every movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was successful, Disney has frequently shelled out money on movies that haven’t been- including one of the biggest flops of the century, John Carter.
Disney spent a whopping $282 million to make a movie that literally nobody wanted to see- and suffered upwards of $80 million in losses that year, says Forbes. Ouch.
And in 2010, the company managed to shell out $260 million for the ANIMATED film Tangled. We won’t ask.
Also on the list, as predictably, are the superheroes movies that we know and love like the Spiderman series or The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Forbes speculates movie budgets have soared because audiences expect bigger and better things each time.
“…our cultural obsession with action-heavy superhero or fantasy films could be to blame: These films require inflated budgets to cover the special effects (both visual and sound) and stunts.”
