There was tragic news today that musician and television host and actor Glen Campbell died today at the age of 81. Campbell has been in the show business for 50 years, and released dozens of albums.
Campbell got started at a young age in music. He had an uncle who had a radio show, and he wanted to join a band and be part of the music scene as a young boy.
In the 60s, he moved to Los Angeles and started actually working in the music industry. He had a chance to play backup music for many famous musicians, including Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.
In 1961 he signed with the record company, and had a first solo release. That allowed him to get a role on TV, where he soon became a staple.
In the mid 60s, he toured for the Beach boys before releasing an album that made it into the top 100.
Campbell continue to put out songs and albums over the next few years, and he eventually put out some of the greatest hits of his life, including Galveston and Where’s the Playground Susie.
Campbell also starred in movies, and TV series. He was in True Grit with John Wayne and Norwood with Joe Namath.
After those films, he continued to write music, and he released some chart topping hits, including Rhinestone Cowboy, and Southern Knights.
In the 2000’s, Campbell was inducted into the country music Hall of Fame, and he managed to release another several albums. In total, he released over 70 albums, and sold 45 million records.
Toward the end of his life, Campbell had a goodbye tour, where he released what he called his final recordings. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011, and he had to be in a long-term care facility.
Campbell’s children ended up suing his wife claiming that she was keeping them from being involved his care and keeping him isolated.
Although in his early years, Glen Campbell did earn quite as much money as musicians do today, later in his life, he earned more, and was able to spend millions of dollars on mansions and other things.
