Hong Chau is an American actress born in Thailand. Her parents fled Vietnam in 1979 and gave birth to her in a refugee camp. She was raised in New Orleans where she lived a tough childhood. She later went to Boston University where she originally majored in creative writing but then shifted to film studies. Here she explored acting as a means to overcome her shyness.
Hong Chau was encouraged to go into acting as most of her peers were quite impressed with her performance. Upon graduation, she worked at PBS and moved to New York where she took acting lessons.
Hong Chau’s career started in 2006 where she appeared in small roles on TV. One of her most notable appearances was in the TV series Treme. Her debut appearance in a movie was for the film Inherent Vice which came out in 2014.
A year later, Hong Chau was cast in an Off-Broadway play titled John by Annie Baker. She also made an appearance on HBO’s Big Little Lies where she had the opportunity to work with big names in the industry such as Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. Her breakout role was in the 2017 movie titled Downsizing as Ngoc Lan Tran who is a Vietnamese political activist who was jailed. Though some considered the role to be somewhat stereotypical, Hong Chau was still given credit for her brilliant performance in the film.
Later Hong Chau was cast in the film American Woman directed by Semi Chellas.
