Margot Kidder was born on October 17th, 1948 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. At the time of death, she died on May 13th, 2018 in her home in Livingston, Montana USA. As aforementioned, an official cause of death has not been announced yet. Even though Superman made her a household name, she had a more humble beginning to her acting career starring in small roles in her native country of Canada. The first thing she got cast in was a short film by the name of The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar in 1968. However, her first American film was Gaily, Gaily in 1969 which was a comedy film. After that, she starred in a number of other TV shows and movies, although she wanted to break out. She continued working on several smaller projects until her big break came when she was cast as Lois Lane in the original Superman movie.
Kidder did readings for the Lois Lane part and was then flown to the UK to do screen tests for it. She had to audition in front of Richard Donner at the time who was the director of the first Superman movie. Donner was happy with her screen test, that he casted her as Lois Lane to go alongside Christopher Reeve’s role of Superman and Clark Kent. Things seemed to have been working fine in the role as she returned to star in Superman II which was also a big hit. The films broke new ground when it came to special effects and is often regarded to kickstart the comic book movie genre going mainstream. If it wasn’t for the success of the first two Superman movies, we may have never gotten the Batman films after it. Fast forward to today, and comic book movies are dominating Hollywood now.
However, the role of Lois Lane wasn’t needed by the time Superman III came around. Unfortunately, Superman III producers Alexander Salkind and Ilya Salkind didn’t like director Richard Donner and Kidder was a huge supporter of the director. The character of Lana Lang was instead used in the third movie as Clark Kent’s love interest. Kidder however got the chance to reprise the role of Lois Lane for the final time in 1987 in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
Sadly after her role as Lois Lane ended, her movie career started to fade away, In more later years, she would star in multiple smaller TV shows and movie projects. Her luck did not seem to be great in 1990 when she was in a car accident and she had to stop working for almost two years. This made her have some financial problems due to the fact she was physically unable to work.
