Mr. T was born on May 21, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in one of the city’s housing projects. After he was discharged from the United States Army, Mr. T tried out for the Green Bay Packers but did not make the team. He then worked as a bouncer and eventually became a bodyguard for almost ten years.
Some of his clients included Joe Frazier, Diana Ross, Steve McQueen, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks. He charged from $3,000 to $10,000 per day depending on the risk rate and location.
Mr. T won in two tough man competitions, America’s Toughest Bouncer and Games People Play. In 1980, Sylvester Stallone saw him on America’s Toughest Bouncer and he was cast in Rocky III as Clubber Lang. He was then cast in in another boxing film titled Penitentiary. On television, he appeared on an episode of Silver Spoons, The A-Team and in Diff’rent Strokes. In 1983, Mr. T starred in Mister T, a cartoon that premiered on NBC.
In the same year, he appeared on the film called DC Cab. In the following year, Mr. T’s motivational video was released. He gives advice to children in the video.He also released an album titled Mr. T’s Commandments followed by another album called Mr. T’s Be Somebody…or Be Somebody’s Fool! Mr. T starred in a television series called T. and T. During this time, it was reported that he was earning around $80,000 per week for his role in The A-Team and $15,000 for personal appearances. In 1995, he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma.
His career slowed down during this time and he only appeared on the TBN Christian television network, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and commercials with Comcast and for the chocolate bar, Snickers and for Hitachi Data Systems.
In November 2007, he did a television commercial for the online game, World of Warcraft. In the following year, he appeared on Shopping TV and sold his Mr. T Flavorwave Oven. In 2009, he provided the voice for Officer Earl Devereaux in the film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Succeeding television appearances included World’s Craziest Fools, I Pity The Tool and Dancing With The Stars in 2018.
Mr. T’s professional wrestling career began in 1985. He was partnered with Hulk Hogan at the World Wrestling Federation’s first WrestleMania which he won. In 2014, he was inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame.
