Cambridge-based philanthropist and political activist, Barbara Lee, began her tenure as one of Boston’s wealthiest people after divorcing her husband, Tom Lee. She’s since started a foundation to support women in politics, and has racked up a net worth of an estimated $213 million.
Barbara Lee created The Barbara Lee Family Foundation in 1998, and hosted a $500,000 fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in October of ’06. The first $5 million raised by the foundation was given toward the new $62 million Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Her most recent donation to the ICA was a gift of $10 million worth of art by women.
Lee also sold her Brookline home for $18.5 million, which set a city record at the time.
