Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande is an entrepreneur in the Boston area best known for co-founding the internet equipment manufacturer, Sycamore Networks. His name was granted to the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at MIT, and the Deshpande Foundation. To his success, Desh Deshpande has an estimated net worth of $412 million.
Deshpande grew from humble beginnings. He started Cascade Communications with only $1,000 and later sold it for $3.7 billion. At one point, shortly after the founding of Sycamore Networks, Deshpande’s net worth totaled $13 billion, making him the wealthiest man of Indian descent on earth. Sycamore’s share price has since plummeted from $200 to less than $5.
Desphande continues to invest in startups. In 2010, President Barack Obama appointed Deshpande to the co-chairmanship of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
