P Square got its start in St. Murumba secondary school in Jos, Nigeria. They were active members of the school music and drama clubs. They later formed an acapella quartet called MMMPP. They were influenced by international performers such as Michael Jackson, MC Hammer and Bobby Brown. Later in 1997, they formed a group called Smooth Criminals. They performed at different occasions and school functions and later became household names in Jos.
Peter and Paul returned to music school in 1999. They polished their keyboard, bass, drums and rhythm guitar skills. Some of their songs were also included in the soundtrack of some films including Mama Sunday, Moment of Bitterness, Eva’s River and Tobi.
In the same year, Peter and Paul studied Business Administration at the University of Abuja. When other band members left to study in universities, Peter and Paul formed their own group called P Square. In 2001, Benson & Hedges sponsored the release of their debut album called Last Nite, after they won the Grab Da Mic competition.
P Square also won several awards through the years including 2003 Amen Award for Best R & B Group. The year 2005 saw the release of their second album. The video for this album was at number one position on MTV Base chart for four straight weeks.
They also performed with Sean Paul and Ginuwine. Game Over, their bestselling album was released in 2007 and sold for 8 million copies. Their fourth album, Danger, was released in 2009. P Square won the Artist of the Year at the Kora Awards on April 4 2010. They received $1 million as award winners. On August 29, 2014, P Square released a single track featuring T.I., an American artist. On September 14 of the same year, they released their sixth album called Double Trouble.
P Square were given Range Rover SUV when they became Globacom’s Glo Ambassadors. They were not renewed the following year due to a falling out between Peter and the company’s representative. The duo disbanded in 2018 reportedly after having a disagreement regarding their manager’s role. They bought mansions next to each other in Atlanta in January of 2014.
