The duo of Mobb Deep consisted of Havoc and Prodigy. They originally called themselves “Poetical Prophets.” In their rise to success with their second album, “The Infamous,” the rapper name “Mobb Deep” was born. Prodigy rapped about his experience with street life.
In the 1990’s, Mobb Deep emerged as peers of rappers such as Notorious B.I.G. and Jay Z. Despite their success, however, Prodigy was compelled to go solo, and released his album, H.N.I.C, in which a number of well-known producers such as The Alchemist, Rockwilder and Just Blaze were featured.
Interestingly, Mobb Deep was part of the infamous rivalry between East Coast and West Coast rappers during the 1990s. Mobb Deep actually garnered a mention in Tupac’s hit, “Hit ‘Em Up,” which served as a tribute to the animosity among all of the rappers.
Unknown to many of his fans was the fact that Prodigy (born Albert Johnson) has sickle cell anemia and was prone to going into crises. Although his family was filled with musicians, Prodigy was forthcoming about his father’s life of petty crime, even penning in his autobiography a story about how his father robbed a jewelry store while he sat in the car as a child.
In addition to having a wildly successful music career, Prodigy had also broken into the cooking industry. Last year Prodigy published “Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook.”
