Rosa Maria Perez, or Rosie to her friends, was born on the 6th of September, 1964 in Bushwick part of Brooklyn. Her parents, Lydia Perez and Ismael Serrano, were from Puerto Rico. They were married to different people and Rosie was the result of their affair. Because of the complicated relationships she had with her family, she developed a speech impediment. And it was not until she started attending Grover Cleveland High School that she slowly started to talk again. Perez is Puerto Rican by blood and, with the help of the nuns, had a strict Catholic upbringing. However, she often identified as a Nuyorican – a New Yorker with Puerto Rican blood.
Rosie Perez might have a rocky relationship with her family, but that didn’t stop her from becoming successful. When Rosie was 19, she started acting as a dancer on Soul Train. By the time she was 24 years old, Spike Lee had hired her for an acting role – her debut, Do the Right Thing.
Because of her musical aptitude and background in dancing, Rosie Perez was able to choreograph music videos for famous people – Janet Jackson, Diana Ross, and The Boys, to name a few. In Living Color, a television program had also hired her to choreograph their dancing group, the Fly Girls. She also worked as a segment producer for them. But she did not neglect acting. By the time she had been working full time, she also landed another major role in White Men Can’t Jump, a comedy film.
Her name slowly became known in the acting industry. One such reason was that she was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the 1993 film Fearless. Rosie then became part of more and more films such as Perdita Durango and The 24 Hour Woman. She was also part of Seth Rogen and James Franco’s film, Pineapple Express, severely increasing her fame.
Apart from her acting, Rosie Perez also did voice acting. She is responsible for voicing Click, a camera on Nick Jr.’s Go, Diego! Go! Rosie also did the voice of Chel, a native woman, in the DreamWorks Animation Film, The Road to El Dorado.
Rosie’s skill set had been honed by the experiences she had in acting. But did you know? She is an avid fan of boxing! And in June of 2013, she became a grand marshal for the International Boxing Hall of Fame Parade.
Her skill in acting (and writing) also led her to publish her autobiography. Titled as “Handbook for an Unpredictable Life: How I Survived Sister Renata and My Crazy Mother, and Still Came Out Smiling…”, it became a hit for weeks before slowly dying down.
By the time 2014 rolled around, ABC had announced that Perez would become The View’s new co-host. With Whoopi Goldberg as moderator, Rosie O’Donnell as a returning co-host, and the newcomer Nicolle Wallace, ABC was sure to hit the top of the charts. Despite her successes, she left The View on the 8th of July, 2015.
Now, she is married to the artist, Eric Haze, and is currently filming for Rising – a 2018 American musical drama TV series.
Rosie Perez has had a long 25-year acting career with appearances in more than 30 films and over 20 TV shows. She has accumulated a sizable amount of wealth over that sustained career.
In all, The estimated Rosie Perez net worth 2021 is $12 million dollars.
