He was born on the 14th of October in Bronx area of New York City but Stephen A Smith was raised in the Hollis section of Queens. He was the second youngest of six children born to parents who were originally from Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Stephen A Smith ancestry were all black except his maternal grandmother who was white.
Stephen A Smith graduated from Thomas Edison High School in Queens and also attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for one year. Stephen A Smith then received a basketball scholarship to attend Winston-Salem University, a historically black university.
When Stephen A Smith was in college he played basketball under coach Clarence Gaines. He wrote about the coach for the university newspaper even while he’s still on the team. His print media career started with the Winston-Salem Journal.
