Taraji Henson was born as Taraji Penda Henson on September 11, 1970. Her parents, Bernice Gordon and Boris Henson were at Washington, D.C. by the time she was born – and that was where they stayed. By the time she was at Howard University, she was studying acting. Her Hollywood career started with guest-roles on several talk shows before being able to act in a film.:
Taraji’s first role had been in the 2001 film, Baby Boy. This film landed her into the Hollywood track that she had longed for. She had always portrayed women that were thrust into the most spectacular settings. These can be seen in the films, Satan’s School for Girls, Baby Boy and the Book of Love: The Definitive Reason Why Men are Dogs in 2000, 2001 and 2002 respectively.
By the time it was 2005, Taraji Henson was part of the Hustle & Flow. She played the role of Terrence Howard’s love interest, Shug. Although the film had two nominations for Academy Awards, it only won one. In 2008, she played the role of Benjamin Button’s mother along with Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button’s father.
