Tracee Joy Silberstein, aka Tracee Ellis Ross, is an American actress and model born on October 29, 1972. She is the daughter of singer/actress Diana Ross and Robert Ellis Silberstein. In 1996, Ross made her first silver screen appearance in the indie film Far Harbor, and shortly after went on to host The Dish. She then landed a lead role in the TV movie Race Against Fear: A Moment of Truth which tackled a young woman’s struggles with abuse. Her first major film appearance was in the 2000 movie Hanging Up.
Shortly after, she was cast for MTV’s The Lyricist Lounge which was a variety show for music, comedy, and other various skits and sketches.
Her best known work was for the TV comedy series Girlfriends where she played the role of Joan Carol Clayton. Due to her performance, she was able to win an NAACP Image Award in 2007 and 2009 for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. She then went on to star in the HBO movie Life Support alongside her brother Evan Ross and Queen Latifah.
In 2011, she went on to star in the sitcom Reed Between the Lines which helped her win another NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series the following year.
Thanks to her performance in the 2011 Lifetime film Five, she was again nominated for an NAACP Image Award and Black Reel Award for Outstanding Actress in a TV movie or mini-series.
Her claim to fame came in 2014 when she, along with Anthony Anderson, were cast as the lead protagonists in the ABC sitcom Black-ish. The show earned positive responses and reviews overall which helped her again win two NAACP Image Awards. Her performance also earned her nominations for a Critics’ Choice Television Award and a Primetime Emmy.
She later earned her doctorate of fine arts from Brown University in the year 2018.
